Winter Anime 2014 – First Impressions – Super Sonico: The Animation

Super Sonico: The Animation has kicked off with a bang… and lots of blushing.

Episode one introduced us to Sonico, her school mates, band friends and manager. We were immediately served up a slew of anime clichés (“oh no, I’m already late!”) but the episode was cruisy enough and well paced that it didn’t really bother me.

It seems the focus of the show will be on Sonico’s busy college life as she balances a band and some modelling on the side. The college setting is refreshing and once the music kicked in, SoniAni felt like a grown up K-On! seeing as Sonico might even be as ditzy as Yui. Although that is a pretty big call. Either way, the combination of music, slice-of-life and some comedy elements mixed together well.

There was some ecchi in this episode which was ok, but I hope the show focuses on the music and characters more as the story unfolds. However, Nitro+ have released a lot of eroge in the past so I guess we’ll wait and see.

Perhaps the only disappointing part of this debut episode was the CGI during the ED. The song was great. Although visually it was a total mess. The lip-sync was laughably disjointed and the character models just looked flat and lifeless. This is a shame because the song was fine but it’s not such a big deal.

So how does this show compare to last season’s digital teen idol, Miss Monochrome?

For a start, it’s much more steady – Miss Monochrome was already in outer space by about episode 4. The 5 minute series was also quicker and more random, where as SoniAni carries a much more realistic vibe. They both have a similar premise, but they’re totally different shows really. Personally, I already like SoniAni a little better.

A few clichés aside, SoniAni’s first episode was mostly enjoyable.

(Super Sonico is the mascot for Japanese software company Nitro+. Her band mates in the anime – Suzu Fujimi & Fuuri Watanuki, both appeared in the 2010 eroge VN “Axanael”.)

☆Coming soon☆

  • Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil
  • Wake Up, Girls

And probably more.
