Fall Anime 2013 – Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Comedy wo Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru – Episode One Impressions

Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Comedy wo Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru is a comedy/ecchi series that follows Kanade Amasuka, a high-schooler who lives with this strange curse where a mysterious voice dictates his actions by offering a bunch of bizarre choices during his daily life one of which he must pick or else be faced with intolerable pain.

Potential for hilarity: very high.

Actual hilarity: very low.

This debut episode was kind of up and down. It started great with a bunch of historical references that were actually really funny. The introductory spiel discussed the belief that each man is the master of his own destiny, and the choices he makes set the course for his future, be it wildy exciting or simply mundane. The intro was very tongue-in-cheek and set the tone of the show very well. Sadly it just went downhill from there.

Forcing the MC to make visual-novel style decisions at random is a fair gimmick, but it was not really used creatively at all. Every decision was designed to embarrass Kanade (of course) which already felt very tired and overdone by the end of the episode. I guess I was foolish to have hoped for a little more from this show but that doesn’t change the fact that it just came off as… kinda flat.

Maybe the new girl who fell out of the sky at the end will save the show? I don’t know. I doubt it. But right now this show has basically nothing to offer besides Kanade looking like a buffoon, which was not really that entertaining.

To summarize: Astonishingly boring, immature and agonizingly formulaic debut episode. Probably not worth your time.
